Who we are

The families who try leaving us tend to come back.

That’s not a line we made up. A customer wrote it in a Google review after she tried grocery store meat for a month. She said they hated it and went right back. We’ve been at this in Peterborough since 1984, and honestly that’s still the best argument we’ve got.

Start with the meat, because that is what people notice

Google sorts our reviews into topics on its own, and the biggest one by a mile is meat quality. That isn’t us picking what to show you. It’s just what our customers keep writing about.

“We have been a loyal customer of Shopease for over 8 years and we have always been impressed, satisfied, and pleased with the amazing quality of the food and the top-notch customer service. With rising food costs, we tried buying grocery store meat for a month. We hated it and went right back to Shopease.”Kelly R. · 8+ years

All our meat comes from Ontario farms, and it’s the same food going to every household on every route. The reason people notice isn’t complicated. Your meat isn’t sitting in a tray under a light waiting for somebody to pick it up. It’s cut and wrapped for your order, after you’ve told us what you want, then stored in our freezers here in Peterborough until it goes out to you.

Cut and packed the way you asked, not the way it comes

This is the part that surprises people first time round. You tell us how thick you like a steak. What size roast fits your oven and your table. How much ground beef you’ll actually get through in one go. Whether the chicken comes whole, halved or in portions.

Then that’s what turns up, labelled so you can read it from across the freezer. None of it costs extra, and it’s the biggest practical difference between this and buying the same weight off a shelf.

“We have been using Shopease for close to 20 years. The service is excellent, food is great quality, packaging is customized, and love the convenience of having all your meat in your basement (fewer trips to the store, reduces the stress of meal planning, consistently great quality). Any issues and they are quick to address them, no questions asked.”Melissa M. · close to 20 years

Family owned since 1984

Three families have run Shopease in that time, and Steve Gunsolus is the third. He still does planning calls with customers himself, which tends to surprise people who expect the owner to be somewhere else.

Forty-plus years in a city this size isn’t something you manage on one-off sales. Most of the people we feed came to us because a parent, a neighbour or somebody at work told them to give us a call.

The service is the part people write about

We’d rather show you than tell you, so here’s a customer describing what happens when something goes wrong. Which it does, because we’re a food company and nobody bats a thousand.

“Steve and Murray have been fabulous over the years. The products are always top quality, and in the very rare event they aren’t, they are at our door to replace it right away (they even replaced our Christmas ham on Christmas eve one year!!). They are kind, courteous, helpful, and so patient when I ask a bunch of questions!”Amanda J. · Google review

That’s the standard we aim at. Our own people deliver, so whoever carries your order down to the basement freezer works here and knows what’s in the box. If something isn’t right you get a person on the phone, not a ticket number.

What we promise, in writing

Four things, and they’re printed on the order you sign, not just said on a website where they’re cheap to say.

Everything we deliver carries a 12-month quality guarantee. Your prices are locked for 36 months from the day you sign, so if you re-order inside that window you pay what you agreed to pay. You’ve got 14 days after delivery to tell us something doesn’t suit your family, and we’ll replace it. And our own people deliver it, carry it in, and put it where you want it.

How an order actually gets built

You sit down with one of our Food Planners and work out how your family really eats. Not how you’d like to eat. How you actually do, on a Tuesday, when everyone’s tired. They’ll ask what nobody in the house will touch, and roughly what you’re spending on groceries now.

Then they build to that number. The whole idea is that the order replaces what you’re already spending instead of landing on top of it, and that it lasts you the term. If it doesn’t do both, it’s been built wrong, and that’s ours to sort out before you sign anything. The call is free and nobody asks you for payment details.

Come and see the place, if you like

We’re at 7-774 Rye Street in Peterborough. Fair warning, it’s a working warehouse and freezer, so there’s no storefront to wander around and it isn’t much to look at. But if you’d like to put a building to the name, call (705) 745-4242 first and somebody will be expecting you.

Honestly though, the quickest way to check us out isn’t anything we could write here. It’s our Google reviews, because our customers wrote those and we didn’t. A lot of them mention how many years they’ve been with us. That’ll tell you more than we can.

Where we go

All over Ontario, on routes that run out of Peterborough. Home here in the Kawarthas, down through Northumberland, into Oshawa and Durham, east to Kingston, and north to North Bay and Sudbury.

Every town we call at is listed on the where we deliver page. If you can’t see yours and you’re not sure, text your postal code to (705) 304-0080 and we’ll tell you straight either way.

Questions, answered

Is the meat actually better than the grocery store?

Our customers think so, and they're the ones worth asking. Google's own review topics put meat quality at the top by a wide margin, and more than one review describes trying grocery store meat for a while and coming straight back. It's cut and wrapped for your order rather than sitting in a tray waiting for a shopper, and it stays frozen from our warehouse to your freezer.

Can I really choose how it's cut?

Yes, and it costs nothing. Steak thickness, roast size to fit your oven, ground beef in the pack size you'll get through in one go, chicken whole or halved or in portions. You say it when the order is planned, and that's what turns up, labelled so you can read it from across the freezer.

Is Shopease Foods a real company?

We're. Shopease Foods Inc. has been trading out of Peterborough since 1984 and we're on our third family of owners. You'll find us at 7-774 Rye Street, and the phone numbers on this page reach actual people.

Who owns Shopease Foods?

Steve Gunsolus. He is the third owner in the company's history and he still sits down and plans orders with customers himself, which surprises people who expect the owner to be somewhere else.

What happens if something isn't right?

You get a person, not a ticket number. You've 14 days after delivery to tell us an item doesn't suit your family and we replace it, and everything carries a 12-month quality guarantee. One customer's review mentions us replacing a Christmas ham on Christmas Eve, which gives you the idea.

Is this a subscription?

No. Nothing shows up unless you ordered it. You agree an order, we deliver it, and that's that. Plenty of people come back when they're running low, but nothing happens on its own.

Do I have to buy a freezer?

Not at all. We'll build the order around whatever freezer you've already got, or split it into two deliveries so you're never storing the lot at once. If you do want more room, we'll supply a chest or upright at our cost and we don't mark it up.

Do I have to give payment details to get a quote?

No. To quote you we need to know how your household eats and roughly what you spend. Payment only comes up once you've decided you want to go ahead.
